This week we conclude our three-part series on creating a workout centered around your why - the thing that keeps you going when the going gets tough. (If you're just tuning in now, be sure to catch up with the posts on energy and longevity!) Our workout this week combines facets of the previous two routines and is optimized to improve your every-day capability.
Week 3: Workout for Capability
Daily life includes many physical challenges – whether it be carrying the groceries up three flights of stairs, walking between tourist attractions on vacation, or taking care of those around you. This plyometric-focused workout will help strengthen your body to be more capable.
Before you begin, take five minutes to warm-up with your favorite dynamic stretches.
Complete 3-5 sets of each of the following exercises.
10x Box jumps
10x 180 jump squats – or squat pulses
10x Skater hops
10x Medicine ball slam – or snap downs if no ball
10x Leap frogs
10x Steam engines
10x Mountain climbers
Way to go! Make sure to cool down with five minutes of static stretches.
My Challenge to You
As we conclude this three-part series, I challenge you to set goals related to your why with measurable benchmarks. If you want to be able to improve your flexibility, maybe that looks like incorporating stretching into your morning routine each day. If you want to see all the sights on your next vacation without getting winded, perhaps time on the incline treadmill would be a valuable addition to your workouts. Whatever your goals, they don't mean much if you can't measure your progress towards them. Creating benchmarks for yourself will reflect your growth and keep you moving forward.
