We return this week with a brief post, wherein we expand on the concept introduced last week of building a workout around your why. This time, we will focus on an area often overlooked by athletes and gym enthusiasts: longevity and mobility. Lifting heavy weights or running the fastest mile is great, but if you don’t take time to build base strength and stretch your muscles, all your hard work will likely lead to injury. This week’s workout offers a nice blend of both strength and mobility exercises that can be easily accomplished at home if you do not have access to a gym.
Week 2: Workout for Longevity & Mobility
Staying active and mobile should be a priority for all of us as we age. Strength and mobility training are great for improved flexibility and overall longevity.
Before you begin, take five minutes to warm-up with your favorite dynamic stretches.
Complete 3-5 sets of each of the following exercises, adding weight as desired.
10x Cat-cow stretch
10x Downward/upward dog stretch
10x Forward/reverse arm circles
10x Handstand Lever
10x Squat holds (hold the lowered squat position for 3 sec. before rising)
10x Pushups (perform pushup variations as needed)
Way to go! Make sure to cool down with five minutes of static stretches.
My Challenge to You
Last week, you nailed down the why behind your workouts and you set a visual reminder for yourself of why you do what you do. This week, I want you to craft a workout around your why. You can use the past two weeks of workouts as inspiration or come up with something new. Create a workout that is modeled after your motivation and goals; whether they be centered around increased energy, longevity and mobility, capability, or something else entirely. The important part is to include exercises you actually want to do, that will make it easier to stick to it.
We’ll see you next week for the final installment of this three-part series! Check out our YouTube channel for demonstration videos and workout inspiration.
