The Non-Negotiables That Keep My Life On Track

Here at Warrior Minded, we're not strangers to busy lives. I thrive on having a full schedule where every moment is filled with some task or activity. However, life is unpredictable and I have learned that I can't rely on motivation or perfect conditions. I need systems to keep me on track so I can keep up with everyday challenges. This is where my routines and non-negotiables come in.
These are small habits that make a big difference; they build the foundation for resilience in every area of my life. While the routines may shift depending on the season of life I'm in, their purpose stays the same - to keep me grounded, focused, and moving forward. Here are some examples of routines and non-negotiables I try to implement daily:
Setting out clothes for work the night before - this reduces the number of decisions I have to make when I'm rushing to get out the door.
Packing a gym bag first thing in the morning - I've found that I'm far more likely to go to the gym straight from work if my bag is already packed.
Writing a list of priorities for the day - I focus on several main tasks, then treat anything extra as a bonus.
Taking a few minutes of quiet to center myself before the day begins - see our post on slowing down for tips on how to do this.
Journaling about things that I am grateful for - some days this comes easier than others, though I have found it to be humbling and a good shift of perspective.
Structuring my days around these simple habits has resulted in big changes. I feel calmer, more intentional, and better prepared for whatever comes my way. Things tend to run smoother, despite the difficulties of life that arise.
That said, not every day includes all of these things. That is the ideal situation, but some days look quite different.
On the days when everything seems to be going wrong and it all feels out of balance, I lean on my non-negotiables. For me, these include things like making my bed when I wake up, eating breakfast, and moving my body in some way. I know that all else may fail, but as long as I do those things, my day will turn out alright.
My Challenge To You:
Take some time to come up with your own list of routines and non-negotiables. Maybe you're already doing some of these things, and maybe this post inspired you to try something new.
Just remember, you're not going to hit every single routine all the time. Some weeks you may make it to the gym four times, pack your own lunch every day, and feel invincible. Other weeks, your car will break down, or you'll have a cold, or you'll be staying up late to meet deadlines. In those times, turn to your non-negotiables to carry you through. Because resilience isn't built on perfect days, it is built on the days you show up anyway.
